Priceff Featured in Finnish Journal Tekniikka & Talous

Finland's leading technology and business journal, Tekniikka & Talous, covered Priceff's approach to dynamic pricing, describing today's fixed-price norm as an outdated, wasteful mechanism. Research director Anders Ekholm explained why simple, demand-based pricing algorithms can make both customers and sellers winners.

Our everyday economy wastes resources constantly, and everyone loses out because of it. Simple, dynamic pricing algorithms would make winners of both customers and service providers, the startup Priceff believes. Cinemas overflow on premiere nights and sit empty on weekday afternoons. Hotel rooms and airline seats are often left unsold too — the market doesn't always allocate resources in the most efficient way possible.

"Olemme tottuneet tällaiseen, mutta silloin emme käytä resursseja tehokkaimmalla mahdollisella tavalla. Puolityhjät bussit, junat ja lentokoneet ovat tuhlausta, mutta sitä on myös myydä tavara loppuun liian halvalla," Anders Ekholm, Research Director at Priceff, told Forum magazine. Ekholm has more than 20 years of experience in the financial sector.

Until now, only multinational giants have been able to afford dynamic pricing models and business intelligence, since these require heavyweight data-processing and data-collection infrastructure.

Helsinki-based Priceff takes the opposite approach: it pays little attention to complicated variables and focuses purely on demand. Its aim is to bring dynamic pricing into the mainstream.

"Se sopii vaikka itsensä työllistävälle parturille. Ilmiö kasvaa Yhdysvalloissa ja siitä tulee arkipäivää Euroopassa muutamassa vuodessa. Tehokkaampi hinnoittelu antaa selvän kilpailuedun," Ekholm sanoo.

A handful of spas and restaurants have been piloting Priceff's autodynamic algorithm since the start of the year. It can be applied to any time-bound service, with prices moving up and down according to demand in the moment.

"Olen kypsytellyt ideaa kymmenen vuotta. Pääsiäisenä 2006 tajusin, miten älytöntä on, että lennot myydään loppuun jo kauan ennen tiettyjä juhlapyhiä. Se on merkki liian halvasta hinnasta. Vastaavasti koneet ovat välillä puolityhjiä. Silloin kannattaisi laskea hintaa ja saada paikat täyteen," Ekholm sanoo.
